The original carb and Turbo itself, was sized small to be the main boost
restriction.
Limiting the boost in this manner, it didn't require a wastegate.
A Corvair Turbo engine will not self-destruct if it is run without it's
muffler.
Turbo mufflers came into wider use by performance enthusiasts looking for
less
exhaust backpressure, not more.
