Smitty,
The factory headrests definitely do slide down into the seat back. Anything
that attaches to the outside of the seat is aftermarket. The factory
headrests were first offered in 1966; not a big surprise though if, 40 years
later, at least one pair had been reupholstered in the '65 pattern.
(Especially since the '65 pattern does not have any buttons so is easier to
fiddle with.)

Smitty Says: maybe 6-7 years ago a fellow clubbie brought me a pair of
headrests to re-upholster for his 65 Vert. Reading the comments here it
seems that the 66s were attached to the backs of the backrest. These were
not. The shafts slid down into sockets in the top of the seats and had neat
chrome bezels around the shaft holes. Of course we never know what kind of
hanky panky these cars have endured in their lives. This car had 65 seats
in it. It was sold at the Carlisle convention. I remember him talking
about how different they were mounted from the 66 headrests.
