Driving down from the NorthWest, you must get over to Highway One before Monterey or 
Carmel, then South over Big Sur. It's a route made for driving a Corvair. Don't let anyone 
talk you out of it!

I have driven that route and believe me, a flat lander will be much better off to go north on that road on the way home ... traveling south is not for the faint of heart :-)
