My daughter Sarah was given a 1991 VW Jetta "ECO-Diesel" a year ago right 
after she turned 16 (but she didn't have her permit), and I've been "de-bugging" 
it for 16K miles... it's a nice little car, although it needs a few things, 
and eventually a timing belt replaced when I replace the head gasket (the 
exhaust had rusted apart, allowing the pipe to hang, and then it started using that 
green coolant stuff, and I also replaced a parking brake cable, a rear wheel 
bearing, dash lights and speedometer cable, rear shocks, and several other odds 
and ends)... the price was right, and at 271K miles, it has NO blow-by, 
injector pump has NO leaks (knock on wood), and it drives just fine in the snow 
(found out New Year's night after picking up Maggie from her babysitting gig-two 
inches fell on untreated roads in about an hour)... not bad for a 5 speed 1.6L 
turbo... oh, and 40 MPG when I drive the speed limit (37 MPG when I don't)...
Sarah is learning the ins and outs of diesel ownership... plugging it in when 
the temps get in the 30s or lower, learning to wait for the glow plug light 
to go out and checking the oil at each fillup... she likes the sunroof and the 
almost instant heat (that little critter heats up in less than a mile!)... 
she's still working on the "clutch-shift-fuel" synchro, but she's getting there.
I think it will be the perfect car for her when she goes to college, wherever 
that may be... she'll be graduating from high school this May... I just need 
to remember to keep the oil filters in stock for those weekends she comes 
home...

I look at it this way, it has saved the Corvairs from a lot of bad weather 
driving in the 14 months we've had it... and by bad weather, I mean salty/slushy 
roads...
