I was going to respond to this thread about taking the solenoid apart to
turn the top terminal 180 degrees.

Then here you go and tell how to do it with out removing the starter or
solenoid.

Way to go!

I find the terminal worn way more often than the copper contact disk. I
used to be able to buy the terminal locally and replace them.

To explain Harry's comment:

The solenoid being bad gives the click, click, click.

The Bendix or starter drive being bad gives the whine without engaging the
gears.

Another trick that works well ...

If time or money is tight or you can't get a new solenoid
right when you need it, try this:

Disconnect the ground cable at the battery.
Disconnect the positive battery cable from the starter
Remove the nut that is under the battery cable.
Carefully push the remaining stud / bolt about 1/4 inch back
into the solenoid housing.
rotate the stud 180 degrees and pull it back out.
Reinstall the retaining nut
Reinstall the positive battery cable.
Hook up the ground cable at the battery.

This works ... once ... but it could last for years giving
you plenty of time to locate a new solenoid.
