Chris,

You certainly can run it, from the front to the rear, outside the pan, but
keep in mind that GM put it there for a reason. Corvairs are rather low
slung, and there is a  little bit of a safety factor built into where they
placed it. It protects the line form abrasion as well as from most of the
elements. As far as replacing just a few feet of it, that will work. Just
don't pull one of my mistakes and forget to put the flare nut on before
flaring the end of the line.
