Hi,
Only real functional difference is the location of the crank seal which on a
late bellhousing is maybe 3/16" closer to the engine. The late crank
sealing surface likewise is smaller. This was done to make room for the
revised flywheel and pressure plate. What this affects is how the crank
seal sits on the end of the crankshaft. If you have an late crank with an
early bellhousing, it puts the sealing lip really close to the edge of the
sealing surface on the crank. But, all is not lost. Clark's sells a shim
to go between bellhousing and the seal to reloacate it closer the the
engine. You could also just hunt down a late bellhousing.
