Chuck asked:
My son and I are replacing the rear wheel bearings on his 66 Corsa. We've
replaced the bearings, races and seals then pulled the manual out to see how
we need to set the play. Does anyone know the best way to set the play
without the special tool that is described in the manual?

Craig replies:
As you have probably surmised, pressing the bearings on with a guesswork
shim set, putting it in the hub, torquing it up and measuring the end play
with a dial indicator, times about five cycles per side is something of a
PITA. I recommend locating a spare spindle and having it ground slightly
undersize so that the bearings just slip on. Slide your bearing and shim
pack on this temporary spindle, put it in the hub, torque it up and measure
the end play. Repeat and swap shims until the end-play is right, then
transfer the bearing and shims to the real spindle, install the seals and
put it together for real. You are going to want a dial indicator, which can
be borrowed, rented, or purchased for not much money. Having the undersized
spindle will probably save about 1-2 hours per side.
That's my advice, FWIW & BTDT
