The only US engine cleaner product I'm familiar with is AutoRx. I have a
"similar" product that has a good diester component that cleans out lifters
and carbon that you don't even know you had. You change out the oil filter
and put in the pint of cleaner about 1200 miles before your next oil change.
You start to hear a difference in a couple days in many engines (my88 BMW
included). I would stay away from the 20 minute flushes. If it is really
going to loosen what the good stuff does, and do it in 20 minutes, you have
a high chance of clogging a passage somewhere.
Then just use a good CI-4 oil. SL is fine, and has more additives than we
had in the old days, but a lot less zddp and detergent than a good
Diesel/Gasoline SL/CI-4.
