<VV> update and new questions re: engine knock

Jed,

  There does not
seem to be a direct relationship to the pace of the knocking and the engine
speed.

The sentence I highlighted sounds like a clue to me. I would assume that a rod knock would have a steady beat in relation to the RPM.

The last knock problem I had in an engine was my "69 307 Nova 300,00 miles. It only knocked on start up, but after warming up the oil press was very low. Disassemble reveled worn main bearings.

Did anybody else pick up on  this sentence?

  I cannot isolate
the area of the engine, but it seems to be low and centered...............  There does not
seem to be a direct relationship to the pace of the knocking and the engine
speed.

What other things would you suggest I rule out before pulling the engine or
at least pulling the heads off?  Does any of this suggest a dropped valve
seat?

Many thanks and Happy New Year!,
