I just noted an interesting situation. While setting the point gap, I put 
the rotor on the shaft and noted it touched the movable part of the points. 
distributor plate, no slop.

Wow, another good answer to  " what else could go wrong?  "   Maybe, after 
all, there * was * a reason the old boys set the " pints " with a thickness 
gauge, and watched the points open and close.
