<VV> FW: occasional oil cloud when starting

Guys,
My daily driver Monza will, on rare occasions, blow an embarrassing
cloud of oil smoke on startup.  This isn't due to the car being parked
unusually - allowing oil to puddle behind the pistons.  Also, I
generally keep the oil no higher than halfway between 'add' & 'full'.
Any idea what could cause this?
