Closed in the summer - so you probably need it since that is when most vairs 
are driven.

Open in winter - to keep carbs from icing.

I've seen several "Summer/Winter Plate (s)" for sale on eBay, but never it 
is explained what in heck they do ! Is something that we need or just a 
Novelty item that all late model Corvair came with ?
