Can't remember if the corvair oil pump is 'submerged' in the sump oil, or
not. Most ,normal, engines arn't. As long as there's some lubricant in the
gears to begin the pumping, you're ok.
I can recall the problems with the 3.0 Buick V6 motors that had the nylon
coated timing chain problems, and when reassembling the front casting (where
the oil pump was), if you didn't pack the pump with vasoline at startup,
the pump would never prime, and the engine would quickly self destruct for
lack of oil pressure.
