I thought I was ready to give my daughter back her 66 Monza 110 PG after
months of rebuilding it. Many of you have offered advice and wisdom that
helped me through the rebuild. I seem to keep running into problems. The
latest comes after I followed the suggestions for breaking in the engine.
Last night, I changed the oil and filter after driving the car for about
thirty minutes. While the oil was out, I decided to take off the oil pan
and seal it with Permatex Hi Temp sealer because I had noticed a modest leak
when the car was standing and had traced it to leaks along the left side of
the pan. This leak did not seem to be dependent on the engine running, it
was just leaking from oil in the pan.
I was happy to go out this morning and find no leaks under the car. I drove
it for about thirty minutes at lunch today. When I got back in my shop and
turned off the engine, I heard a noise reminiscent of a horse relieving
himself after a long drink at the water trough! Much to my horror, I saw
that oil had leaked out in a steady stream. It was too hot to crawl
underneath and get a close look, I will do that tonight. From what I can
see, it looks like the leak is where the front of the engine mates to the
bell housing.
It looked like it dropped about a quart in a period of two minutes or so,
then stopped. I checked the dipstick and still had oil above the "add"
line, so maybe it wasn't actually a quart on my floor. I started the engine
again and watched - sure enough, there was a small stream of oil leaking. I
shut the engine off after 15-20 seconds and the volume/speed of oil leaking
out actually increased once the engine was off. Again, it drained out a
good amount and then stopped.
Any ideas where I should start looking for the cause of this leak?
Many thanks,
Jedd 'the weary novice' Hebrink
