I agree with you. However, As far as my several meters are concerned, my two
analog meters work fine without a battery in the voltage ranges. A battery
IS needed for resistance readings. All three of my digital meters won't turn
on without a battery. It makes sense to me that the digital display
circuitry needs a battery to display. Could they have made the digital
meters work in the voltage range without a battery? Most likely but you
would not get a zero reading without some sort of voltage for the display.
I have never opened up any of my meters and inspected the circuitry. I guess
that I never had the time nor interest. When I'm in the shop, I've got too
many other unfinished projects to use up my valuable shop time.
Just my opinion.

measure external voltage??? Measuring resistance does need an internal
battery,
but what function does the same battery serve in measuring an external
VOLTAGE?
