<VV> rewelding starter gear

As you may know, broken starter noses are often caused by failure of the tack welds of the starter ring gear.
Has anyone attempted to reweld the starter ring gear to the pressure plate/ torque converter in situ? Thru the starter opening in the bell housing or the flex plate bolt access on  the top of the bell housing?
