<VV> Loudly Ticking Engine--Possible Causes?

My 1965 110 hp Monza started ticking very loud the other day.  Sounds like when you run an engine without oil.  I check the engine oil every morning so that isn't the culprit.  It wasn't doing it when I shut it off last week.  The next morning, when I turned it on, the loud ticking was there.  I thought maybe it just needed to warm up...that wasn't it.
   
  I checked compression, it looks good all the way around...
   
  Any ideas about what I should look for first?  Possible sources of this sound?  Could it be that the valves just need adjusted?
