Howdy Folks,
I need to know how to get the telescoping steering collum out of a '65
coupe. Are all parts needed or only some, and the rest can be used off of a
regular collum. If I can not get all the parts whitch ones are the hardest to get?

For the actual removal. After jacking up the front end of the car, and
properly supporting it, remove the pin in the pitman arm from the steering cross
link. After removing the nut, use a pickle fork to wedge them apart, and a
blow on the side to pop it out. After putting on safety glasses (Don't ignore
it, you will pay a price!)From directly underneath the car, you will need to
completely remove one or two bolts connecting the steering box to the column.
(One if a late style, two (both) if an early 65). After those are out, remove
the three long bolts/nuts holding the steering box in place and pry the box
loose from the column by "opening" the clamp. Usually inserting a flat-tip
screwdriver into the slot in the coupling and turning slightly will have the
desired effect. Catch the box as it falls out. If you wish, you completely
remove the coupler at this point. It is a dirty job with the late style coupler. A
screwdriver tip will pop off the retainer clip. Be sure to capture all the
little internal parts of the coupler. Almost everything else comes out from
the drivers seat area. First unplug the two electrical connectors between the
column and the dash. Then remove the three bolts at the firewall. On the late
cars, there is a collar mounted to the other side of the firewall. The collar
has the captive screws that those three bolts screw into. removing the
collar at this point makes removal of the column much easier. There is a bolt
through the firewall used to locate the collar. Remove it and the collar will now
be loose. It may fall out. The two vertical bolts under the front of the
dash are last, and the column will pull right out, though on the later style you
will have to juggle the coupling to get it through the hole in the dash. If
you have completely removed the coupling after the steering box drops out,
pulling the column out is much easier. You're done!
