Jim Said:
A 164 cuin Corvair puts out 35 hp @1,600 rpm, the approximate stall
rpm of the torque convertor. One hp is 9.3 btu per second. So, 325
btu per second. Transmission fluid has a coefficient of heat of
0.5. Figuring six quarts of fluid at 1.7 lbs per quart gives about
65 degrees F per second for the Corvair. In other words the
transmission gets really hot really quick when the brakes are locked
and the gas pedal floored.

Craig adds:
Drag racers have to move up to the start line, set for a moment, then creep
about 8 " to trip the staging light. Once there, you set the line lock or
trans-brake (locks in two gears). When both lanes' staging lights are lit,
there will be a drag race in a maximum of two seconds; after both staging
lights are lit, that's when you hit the gas. Most of the time, there is only
1-second of locked run-up. 65-degrees of ATF rise isn't going to hurt a
thing and the idea is to WIN, right :-)
In the case of the poster, I think he was talking about flag-start fun runs
but the same thing is true - 1-2 seconds of stall. BTW, a stall test is a
normal part of transmission testing - the books recommend 5-seconds max,
which has to be a real scorcher behind a big block or especially a diesel.
