You can tell which direction the tire was rotating. Look carefully at the tread. The
edge that was leading will be rounded just a little more than the trailing edge. The
trailing edge will have a bit of a "feather" to it or a sharper edge.

For most people the hand 'sees' better than the eye. Gently rub a hand along the
direction of the tread like you were stroking a dog's back. Even tires with very little
wear will feel smooth in the direction of roll and a bit rough in the opposite direction.
