<VV> Tire question

I have a (dumb) question about radial tires.  I remember back in the 70s 
that if you reversed the direction of rotation of a radial tire (say, 
moved the Left front to the right front), the tire would come apart 
fairly quickly.  Is this still true today?  I have a set of radials on 
mag wheels that came with my '65 Monza and I took them off to use some 
stock wheels/tires.  I'm not sure of the location they were on when I 
took them off.  I want to put them back on, but I'm concerned about 
whether the orientation is the same.  Any comments or suggestions would 
be welcomed. . .
