i too have an engine with a lifter that has given trouble adjusting. so i  
went to change it with my "foolproof" tool , a small screwdriver like tool with  
threads on the end that usually grab the lifter by the oil hole and pull out 
the  most varnished up part. this time i was only able to move that lifter 
length of  its stroke , then all it did was click as i moved it , like a positive 
feel ,  not like varnish.  must be mushroomed over.   so i gave it up for  
now , and hope to deal with it without tearing the engine down. any other ideas  
that have worked? most of the time this little tool from a dollar store years 
 ago has worked on the most stubborn lifters. it is a very small shaft with a 
 handle on it and tapered threads like a self tapper. it is just right to 
grab  lifters by the oil hole firmly. this time i got fooled badly.
