<VV> PG transmission swap - advice requested

Guys,
We plan to swap a PG (trans only) this weekend - in the car
Having just read through the manual I realize that end thrust clearance is critical.  Without having the proper J-tool; if we assume the donor trans (on a diff) is correctly adjusted - can we compare the old diff to the new diff; or must we go through more procedures?
