Heh... put a quick-shift kit in one.   That will firm it up 
nicely.   It also shortens the shift throw to about 6 inches or so, 
between 1st and 2nd.   Shifting gets to be a muscle building 
experience when it's around freezing outside.

...also, for stiff shifting in an early, check that tunnel pan cover 
for dents.
