Craig,  I'd agree with your original advice.  We all can do  things that 
aren't by the book and make them work well (for our personal use),  but unless the 
owner is a dyed in the wool Corvair guy with lots of hands on  experience the 
result will not be good.  I might have replaced no. 5 stack  without pulling 
the head in the past, but now (with my present time constraints  etc.) I would 
replace the head with a good one or pull the old one and  replace the stack 
by the book.  Especially if it wasn't my car.
