<VV> Update -- low oil pressure in a late model

Well I disconnected the wire to the oil pressure sensor and fired up the motor. The light statyed off momentarily and then came on. If I revved the motor it would "flicker". So I reached through the door in the right lower shroud and disconnected the wire to the heat sensor. Same result --- the light stayed on but would "flicker" if the engine were revved. Seemed like most definitley an electrical short, but to be sure I removed the oil pressure sensor and installed the cheap mechanical oil pressure gauge that I had picked up on the way home. Got just under 30 psi at idle with the engine cold. Revving the motor up to 1000-1500 rpm brought the pressure up to 40 psi. Looks like no problem with the oil pressure.
The wire from the pressure sensor runs under the top shroud (the legendary "turkey roaster") and disappears. Given the problem in taking that off, it will not be repaired. So my son will be driving the car by the "seat of his pants". Told him he just needs to stay "atuned" to the motor, and if it starts "clattering", to pull over immediately. Probably a good experience for him.
At some point in the near future I may run a new wire from the sensor to the dash light down the side but on top of the shroud. Seems like I'd need some wire that has more heat resistant insulation than what I have in the shop. Anyone know where to get such stuff?
    Many thanks for the suggestions.
