My '60 4-door has non-resistor plugs and resistor wires and there's
NO spark noise in its original tube type radio. It had solid-core
wires at one time and even then spark noise in the radio was minimal,
on channel it was silent but tune the radio off-station and there it
was, could hear every single plug each time it fired, buzzzzz right
in time with the gas pedal.
That is why resistance wires are so effective. The Corvair - if equipped
with a front antenna (like 98% of the original cars were) is not usually the
suffering party. Between the Corvair motor and the radio are several layers of
metal and a other RF absorbent material. Solid core wire affects the poor slob
who pulled up behind you at the light. Next time an old Corvette pulls up
next to you, you will be able to tell whether he has removed his ignition
shields. With the fiberglass body, there is only the goofy shielding over the plug
wires to keep the Corvette from being a big, Mobile RF test site. - Seth
