Many thanks,

Jedd - On the Corvair, ther is absolutely no place (other than a clock
circuit) that should use ANY power from the battery at rest. (doors closed
ignition and lights turned off. This isn't the case with a new car, but the Corvair
had no "memory" electronics on board. If you suspect a possible power loss
during shutdown, try this troubleshooting method. Disconnect the battery and
put an ammeter across the circuit from the battery ground cable to the post.
with the doors closed there should be NO current going across the gage and
nothing should show. If you show some current (you can wire a light bulb across
the same connections and look for a glow), that means something is draining
your battery. If there is a drain, to narrow down the search, try removing each
fuse, one by one. If the light goes out or the gage shows a drop in power
used, you have identified the grounding area and you can start looking for bad
wiring or faulty components. If the car will start, a voltmeter across the
battery poasts will tell you if the alternator is charging. You should see 13.8
volts or so. If not, that is where to start. Many auto parts "Stores" - Not
NAPA stores, but consumer stores such as Kragen/AUtoZone will test your
component - the Alternator in this case - for free. - Seth
