I have to disagree there. Air cooled aluminum engines will be noisier than 
a water cooled iron engine and the fan noise doubles that (any engine 
driven fan - the clutch fan on a 400 Pontiac is very noticeable) for one 
thing the shroud is a natural  (but poor) loudspeaker. Then there is the 
exhaust which is next to the engine making even more noise coming from the 
back.

Exacerbating everything is that the Corvair was designed as an economy car. 
One of the corners cut was sound deadening.

Finally, modern cars turn about 2000 rpm at 70. Most Corvairs turn 3,000. 
Like he said, it all adds up.

Do suspect the worst is a 'vert with the rear window zipped down - focuses 
that sound energy inside.
