Let's face it folks; everyone has a different name for
various body styles.

In Europe the old VW Bug is called a Limousine; here
in the US the word indicates a long, luxurious,
typically chauffer-driven automobile.

Back in the Sixties, a typical passenger car, two or
four doors, was at one time or another termed "sedan."
Chevy's four door hardtops were designated "Sport
Sedan" and these models had no "B" pillar.

The word "Coupe" comes from the French (add an acute
accent mark on the final "e"; the word means, "cut"
meaning that the typical sedan greenhouse was
literally "cut" shorter.

So call them what you want and let's move forward;
"coupes" typically refer to two-door models that have
a sporty profile, "sedans" refer to passenger cars in
general (wagons not included though); and "hardtops"
indicate cars with a convertible side window profile
but have a solid roof. Modern "hardtops" are now
retractible or removable (exceptions: The Mercedes
Benz pillarless models and Dodge's new Challenger
concept), but at least when their roofs are up and
windows rolled down, they have the same profile as the
Sixties pillarless models...Bill Hershkowitz
