<VV> low torque in a 140?

My wife drove my 66 Monza coupe home from the doctor's office today.  I
followed in her car.  She told me she never got it out of second.
(140/4speed)  I thought that odd since we were doing 45 or 50 at times.  So
we go out to dinner a little later and I let her drive again, only this time
I'm in the car.  Just as I suspected, she takes off in 3rd.  Who says a
mildly tweaked 140 doesn't have any bottom end torque.  Who needs first and
second anyway?
