<VV> 140 pinging

Hi Guys,
 
Great advice to get me going.  To further clarify, the car has 33,000  
original miles and is totally stock.  I hear the pinging in third gear when  warmed 
up and going to the floor.  There is a band that can be driven  around at 
about 3/4 throttle.  I have played with timing and I will check  and retard 2 
degrees at a time until no ping.  I used to put 100LL fuel in  it and that was a 
great cure.  No longer have access so 97 it is.  I  usually pull shrouds off in 
summer to stay below 300 degrees.  I'll let you  know what goes on.  Thanks
