...what is the availability of early model windshields these days?

Fairly easy to obtain for coupes/convs/sedans - virtually impossible for wagons.  All glass today is tinted, with a shaded band at top.

Buy directly from Prosource in MD or from large distributors like Safelite.  Unfortunately, the glass is very expensive.  Many people have good used glass stashed so that's always a possibility.  Gaskets are available from Clark's/Corvair Underground/Steele.
