I do assume that you are not talking about the whiny noise an alternator makes when it is under load (unplugging the regulator generally answers that question).
Belts can also make odd/unusual noises, which can frequently be temporairily silenced by a spray of WD-40; however, water will do the same thing and it will evaporate -- I reccomend water or an areosol belt dressing to check for belt noise.
Then you get out your "listening stick" or stethescope ...
