I was also out in the vert - yesterday (Friday). Roughly 260 miles round
trip. Glen Ellyn to Hoopeston IL and return. Temp in the low 60s when I
left and overcast. Went through 3 light showers on the way down state, but
at 75mph you don't really get wet in a light shower. Contrary to
"vertiquette" had to lower the visors to horizontal position. This to keep
them from catching the rain and dripping water on me.
Once in Hoopeston, I met up with my cousin who owns a Chevy dealership
there. I also met Larry Jahn (think the pronunciation is like John - but
he'll correct if I'm wrong). He has a 63 Spyder that he bought new and has
recently restored after a 20+ year "lay up" period - part of it in a chicken
coop. A really nice guy and a great story teller. When you meet him (maybe
in Detroit?), have him tell you about his river boat experiences.
To keep somewhat on the original subject. My 65 vert has a spoiler. I was
doing 70-80 on two lane roads with an estimated 40mph cross wind (all flags
I saw were standing straight out with no droop) and the 18 wheelers going
the opposite direction were probably doing about the same speed. I had
minimal effect from the wind or the trucks. I only noticed the need for a
serious steering correction when there was a high bank along the side of the
road - taking me out of the cross wind momentarily. The spoilers do a lot
to stabilize the front end of a vair.
Tire pressure - I run 32R and 24F on a late vert. I also carry over 50lbs
(probably around 80) in the trunk. I've been told (but have not verified)
that the front end of a vair only weighs 600 lbs - and that is likely pretty
close to correct. If the trunk is essentially empty, 22 is probably good on
the fronts. As an aside to this - if you are getting an alignment - have
the trunk loaded to it's "normal" weight - whatever is normal for you. This
will also affect how the car reacts to winds out on the road.
Finally, the trip back was uneventful aside from the fact that I was having
so much fun that I missed a turn. It cost me some extra miles and slower
traffic. The upside was a few more "thumbs up" than I would have gotten out
on the divided highways.
