i bet the can is a water tank for water injection. the gauge is an  
aftermarket boost gauge showing vacuum while running at @1000 rpm showed on the  tach. 
might be a hard car to travel in , needing highest test gas and water  
injection...just my observation.  i had a similar setup for over 20 years ,  , very 
quick , but not a good long trip touring car.
