Mike, this sounds like the classic flaky contact in the starter solenoid.
Maybe it's time to "Flip the disk" to bring up some fresh unmolested copper
in the hi current contact.

On my '66 the starter starts to turn the engine over then stops like the
battery is dead. It only turns for a second or so. I can repeat this process
5-7 times till it fully turns the engine over and the engine starts.
I can go through dozens of strong starts in a week or two then it decides
to repeat the behavior. It is not a true 'dead spot' on the starter, as each
turn of the key activates the solenoid and actually engages the flywheel and
bumps the engine a bit.
