<VV> ac compressor question (non corvair)

I'm replacing the ac compressor clutch on my 94 olds cutlass supreme w / 
3.1L. Not the whole unit, just the clutch. My question is, how do I 
remove the clutch from the shaft? There is a keyway, and it slides on. 
The only way I can see, is to use a gear puller of some kind, but with 
the unit installed, there is only about 6 inches of room to access it. 
Can the clutch be removed without removing / disconnecting the whole 
unit? Please reply privately. Thank You!
