That is one of the apocryphal urban legends that I hear from time to  time.  
Because Corvairs probably had the best protected gas tank of all the  '60's 
cars I don't know why it started.  I usually answer, "No, the  Mustangs and 
Pintos were the ones that caught of fire because of the lay-in gas  tank in the 
trunk."
 
By the way, the Bermuda Triangle is a myth  too........................
