<VV> Alt. Regulator differences

Had a traveler pass thru town tonight.....had new regulator / mechanical.....

1   would not excite regulator thru  idiot light circuit [ went to 4 vdc!]...

2   would charge and regulate if external  12 vdc was applied to term #4

3  A wiring is correct......

4  pull ground strap and unit charged!  but overcharge 17 vdc!

5  Swapped in an old unit that came  in the trunk of my 64.....  works great!!!

any thoughts....  looks identical  and new...no burnt points!
