Unlike a Corvair's hydraulic lifters, a stock Beetle has mechanical lifter which must be inspected and periodically adjusted (reset). Typically every 3000 miles. Failure to do so could result in problems. Valve with too tight clearance will destroy a VW engine with no warning. VW must always be adjusted COLD as Frank Duval mentioned. The John Muir Idiot Guide and the Bentley Publishers VW Factory Shop Manual are recommended. The Idiot Guide is the short title for How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive For The Complete Idiot, By John Muir (first published 1969, revised for 1970, 1971 & later, & FI, still in print, millions sold) http://www.azbaja.com/solex_34_carb.html has valve adj specs also. The idiot manual has great descriptive instructions to easily walk even the most novice thru this proceedure. Go see http://www.shoptalkforums.com/ for VW forums covering everything. Just remember that your VW will require more frequent oil changes, due to not
having an oil filter and Frequent (every 3000 miles) Valve Adjustments. Assuming that this maintenance is followed, your bug should be as happy and trouble free as your Corvair. Tamias Metis
