Smitty,
Your "electrical mod" should only affect vacuum advance at IDLE (by
disabling it) so I don't see how it can have any affect on the timing once you
accelerate OFF idle speed assuming you didn't make a change in the BASE timing
(vacuum advance disconnected).
INHO you can add "women" to the "children and dogs" mentioned in your
Second Question. But don't quote me on that.<GGGGG>
As you are finding out, the WORST problem to rectify is the INTERMITTENT
one that disappears when you go look for it. I remember one Corvair whose 2
carbs I had just rebuilt developed a loss of power but only on hard RIGHT
turns. As soon as the car straightened out from the turn, the power came back.
Of course, I figured it was due to my faulty efforts on one of the carbs.
But one morning the intermittent problem became a PERMANENT problem when the
car refused to start. I discovered the ignition wire to the distributor had
faulty insulation and on hard right turns would move left and ground itself
out, cutting the ignition (this was a 66 A/C equipped car). But this morning
it stayed in contact with the ground preventing the car from starting. Once
the problem became permanent, it was simple to fix.
Good luck on finding your intermittent problem.

Smitty Says: I made the electrical mod to the vacuum advance system for
throttle tip-in. Didn't take the car out and test it even though I knew timing
might need readjusting. Had to go out to a meeting yesterday so I was
watching to see what effect the mod might have on driveability. It was a real eye
opener. (big smile) What had before been a very docile pleasant car to
drive in town immediately became pretty balky off the line. At one point it
left me sitting wide eyed in the middle of an intersection, watching traffic
bearing down on me as I backed off the throttle (against every instinct) to let
the engine catch again. Looks like I was right about needing to mess with
the timing.
Second Question. Just like children and dogs, they never do what is
expected. Corvairs are the same. Ever since I wrote to VV about the electrically
powered run-on of the engine after the key was shut off, it has performed as
designed. Every time I shut the key off the engine stops immediately.
Somebody is screwing with me. I would suspect the "big" Beef or one of his
henchmen, but they live so far away. I'll get back to you on what I find if the
problem comes back.
