In high school from 1971-75 we had to use slide rules because everyone  
couldn't afford the $100+ for a Bomar brain or Texas Inst. calculator. The slid  
only gave you three positions so you had to do some thinking in your  head to 
know if the answer was 10, 100, 1000 or 1/100. Todays kids plug  numbers into 
$1.99 supercomputers and have no idea where the answer comes from.  Where would 
they be without batteries.
