Hey Connie,
WhenI bought my 65 it had a lot of play in the steering. So I had the
suspension checked and found out that the lower ball bearings were shot and
needed replacement. Sooo I had them replaced and there was still slop in the
steering. And then I got my shop manual out, You have one , RIGHT??? I found
out where the steering box is located and took out the plastic plug from the
floorboard, I then got the right sized wrench and a long handel screw
driver. I then loosened the nut with the wrench slightly and gently
tightened the screw, because you don't want to go too far. Then I held the
screw driver in place and tightened the nut around the screw.
I then went for a drive. I couldn't belive the difference. BUT this will not
make it perfect. You can't expect a 40 something car to steer like a car of
today.
With that being said the most efficent "fix" for your car will be to put a
spoiler under the front bumper. I bought a spoiler for an early S-10 pickup.
You can drill holes and use stainless screws with washers and then the ends
will be too long to fit and will have to be cut with a tin snips to length.
I cut mine so that there was enough space for the tires to turn with out
rubbing.
If you follow my advice I think that you will be extremly happy with your 40
something car
Good Luck
