I got my California Smog license on my 18th birthday (you had to be 18)
without any formal schooling except for some classes my employer sent me to,
they were for Union 76 mechanics and taught by an Autolite instructor (back
when Autolite was owned by Ford). When I bought my service station in
Colorado in 1975, I had to take an easy test to become an auto inspector.
