As for the emissions, at least here in NY, the Feds put a gun to our heads
saying they would withhold federal highway dollars if the emissions was not
put into place. NY dragged its feet for several years luckily as they were
poised to hire some out of state contractorws to set up emissions stations
throughout the state with chassis dynos that we would have been mandated to
go to. For those in outlying areas it could mean a drive of over an hour
and long waits to get done. As it is the technology being used was long
outdated before being used, meaning jam ups with the phone lines at the
states end, so you have to twiddle your thumbs and wait................
I hate the Check engine BS.
My 98 Subaru has had the light on for 4 years now and I have to fool with
it to get it off just long enough to get through inspection for another
year. Car still gets 28MPG and smells fine..............

Gary: the opposite is also true. I am glad NY
doesn't have emissions requirements for the oldies.
This computer stuff has gone overboard in my opinion
and that's one reason I drive a Corvair.
Two of my modern cars got the "check engine" light,
were running perfectly, got decent fuel milage and
were in perfect mechanical condition. Each car needed
close to $2,000 in work to repair the electronics.
Needless to say I got rid of both of them before I
would shell out that kind of money.
At least part of this whole emissions stuff was, in
this writer's opinion, designed to net both the dealer
and the manufacturer, hefty profits off the backs of
consumers under the guise environmental
responsibility, which is in of itself a good thing.
But I am sure emission controls could be done in a way
where the customer doesn't get ripped off for
thousands of hard earned dollars to fix a sensor,
especially after having shelled out five figures to
purchase the vehicle in the first place.
One solution of course is to sell the car after the
emissions warranty expires.
Sorry if I'm ranting or rambling...Bill H.
