There is a competing bill, HB1927, that is endorsed by the Virginia Car Club Councils that will update the law without requiring the annual inspections and fees but still curb a lot of the abuses. We are being encouraged to write to our delegates to ask them to support this bill.
If I'm paying annual fees and getting inspections, why the heck would I want antique plates and their driving limitations? Virginia has some stupidity in it. The "safety" inspections are one of the stupidest of the stupid things. How did the people who make money from repairing your car get to decide whether your car is "safe" to drive without repairs?? This is nuts. I lived most of my car-driving life in California and they had no safety inspections and the cars there didn't break down or get into accidents any more often than the ones here. It's strictly a revenue law that sounds like a good idea to the uninformed. No inspection will fix the loose nut behind the wheel and that causes 99% of all accidents.
