I know when you have a big aft facing flat area like the back of a Corvair
(and most cars), you're going to have a nice area of dead, recirculating air
there. Now the chances of the exhaust finding its way back up the hood to
the inlet grill is small but if your lid seal is bad or there's some other
leak, it just might find its way in. Unlikely but possible.
YES THERE IS A DEAD AREA BEHIND THE CAR.
Last time I looked at my Corvair the air inlet to the engine compartment,
either EM or LM, it wasn't located on the rear of the car. Just tail lights
there. The air flow over the deck lid is very strongly toward the rear of the
car. The exhaust gas could churn around behind the car, but it is not going to
make it forward to the air inlets. The side exhaust will most likely get
sucked into the vortex behind the car.
So if you have no tail lights or a bad seal at the rear of the engine lid,
you could get exhaust into the fan and heater. But as the original post stated,
there's no way, during normal operations that the exhaust is going to make
it to the air inlet while the car is moving.
