Back in 1975, as a 16 year old with a 65, 110.pg 4 door, (paid $40) I drove
to Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J. This was before bracket racing days. Then
the Corvair, in stock form ran y/pure stock. Well, since I had a hot rod,
L-78 15 tires on rear on Crager SS, and 14's on the front, I couldn't run pure
stock. They put me in W/SA, a faster class. Like in bracket racing, you ran
off of your nat'l record in that class, which was something like 18.00 sec.
That means the other guy had to let me out, but not as much as I needed. Well
damn, after watching me drive down the track for 5 or 6 seconds he takes off
and red lights, I go 21.76 at 69 mph. I won the round (only one) but also got
a OCIC trophy (only car in class). The exciting thing was just before the
first round, my brake pedal goes to the floor. The shift cable had worn a hole
in the brake line where they crossed in front of the rear axle. We bent the
broken line and hammered it flat. borrowed some brake fluid and just had front
brakes. Two days later, still with front brakes only some guy runs a stop
sign and I lock them (2) up and t-bone him. In my old age, I often wonder how I
survived to get here!!
